STORY

I wrote this on April Fool's Day 2025. I read that the holiday likely came about when New Year's Day was shifted from April backward to January and some were still celebrating New Year's in April and they began to call April 1st April Fools Day. As I was writing the song, it occurred to me it's a little analogous to our current day.

LYRIC

April Fool's Day

I am not the fool
For celebrating the new year
Somehow too late
But not a moment too soon
Not a moment too soon
When all the gallery proclaimed
That April's come and spring has risen
Not a moment too soon
Not a moment too soon

And so I wonder why
The stars in the sky fall down
On April Fool's Day
While all the fools may say
What other fools may say
And paint me like a clown

I am not the fool
For celebrating the new year
When the sun is slow to come a'round
And not a moment too soon
Not a moment too soon
The riots burst in old unrest
Spark cries for us to outlast
Not a moment too soon
When another son is falling too soon

And so I wonder why
The stars in the sky fall down
On April Fool's Day
While all the fools may say
What other fools may say
And paint me like a clown

On April Fool's Day
With the world a spun back around
At celebrations no one's found
Where everyone's a fool
On April Fool's Day

I am not the fool
For celebrating the new year
Somehow too late
But not a moment too soon
Not a moment too soon

And so I wonder why
The stars in the sky fall down
On April Fool's Day
While all the fools may say
What other fools may say
And paint me like a clown

On April Fool's Day
On April Fool's Day
On April Fool's Day

On April Fool's Day

April Fool's Day
